Am I violating the Code of Ethics? Do these people understand each other? Many interpreters find themselves in situations where they are unsure whether their behavior is an ethical conflict, or cultural mediation. In this seminar we will discuss the definition of cultural mediation and the role of the interpreter as the cultural mediator.
We will look at the pros and cons of the dual role, and the appropriate way to provide cultural information without violating our code of ethics. We will discuss common situations that arise in our field and determine appropriate ways to address cultural concerns in those settings. Finally, we will review the Code of Ethics and open a discussion in which interpreters have a safe environment to ask questions to their colleagues on "what would you do?"

AAD (Austin Association of the Deaf) and LSDDGA (Lone Star Deaf Disc Golf Association) will host a Classic Tourney the weekend of June 4-6, 2010, AND, for the first time ever, there will be camping out on the grounds of AAD!
Typically, Disc golfers attending tournaments out of town will camp out instead of staying in a hotel. This year LSDDGA will camp on the grounds of the Deaf Clubhouse instead of a public camping site.
AAD will reserve sites for Disc Golfers before allowing sites to members and friends.
Admission is $15 per person for the weekend, and that includes the use of water and electricity, and access to Austin Deaf Club social events during the weekend.
For tournament info see http://lsddga.com/. For camping info see any AAD officer.

Since 2004, Alan R. Abarbanell has toured the United States with his critically acclaimed, one-man show, "The Abababa Road Tour" chronicling his experiences growing up hearing in a Deaf family. ABABABA--a name given to him by a friend who could not pronounce Abarbanell--is a proud CODA (Child of Deaf Adults). Alan wrote this show as a loving tribute to his Deaf heritage and CODA family. Each performance is dedicated to Alan's parents Joe and Yetta Abarbanell, whom he credits with his sense of humor, creativity and love for his community.
Abababa takes his audiences on a rollercoaster ride of emotion; first pulling them through the hilarious rush and shocking twists of his youth, then plunging them into the tragedy and loss that followed, only to hurl them upwards towards uncontrollable laughter once again! With the simple wave of a hand, Abababa renders each audience exhausted from gales of laughter and torrents of tears by evening's end.
All Proceeds go to Project N.A.D.I.N.E. to help continue our advocacy efforts and to start new programs that will serve the Deaf community!
