A documentary about music, deafness, and the miraculous human brain. This British feature documentary (76 minutes) filmed partly in Texas will have its world premiere at the SXSW 2012 Film Festival. All are welcome.
What if you lost the ability to hear music? Could you find it again ... and could music find you?
Lost and Sound is a moving creative documentary, made by a partially deaf filmmaker. It weaves its way through a startling world of sound and silence, via the ears and brains of three extraordinary people, as they try to re-discover music: a dancer deaf since birth, a young pianist who lost her hearing as a baby, and a music critic facing sudden partial deafness.
Music is one of the greatest of all human experiences; millions of us fall under its spell every day, and it engages more parts of the brain than any other human activity. But 1 in 7 of us will experience hearing loss. Does the end of hearing have to mean the end of music?
Filmmakers will be in attendance with ASL interpreters for Question & Answer sessions.

.5 BEI RID CEUS PENDING
Early Registration - $25 for ceus
On site Registration - $30 for ceus
$5 for students
This Workshop examines the Collaborative Model of Interpreting and an approach to teaming that departs from the "on" & "off" interpreter teaming and approaches the work in a collaborative, "always on" way. Another key component to effective interpretations is preparation as one way to make the content of interpreting more manageable. Barbara-Jean will guide participants in a discussion of the importance of working with those on the entire team including other interpreters and the hearing and deaf consumers. This session includes a discussion of how to apply the Collaborative Model of Interpreting to your work as well as a brief application activity.
Please bring your own lunch!

Voices from El Sayed. In the picturesque Israeli Negev desert lays the Bedouin Village of El-Sayed that has the largest percentage of deaf people in the world. Through generations a unique sign language has evolved making it the most popular language in this rare society that accepts deafness as natural as life itself. The village's tranquility is interrupted by Salim's decision to change his deaf sonâs fate and make him a hearing person using the Cochlear Implant Operation.
