Identifying Good and Bad Bugs

Zilker Botanical Garden, 2220 Barton Springs Rd Wizzie Brown, integrated pest management specialist for AgriLife Extension in Texas, will lecture about how to manage pests in your yard through IPM. IPM is an environmentally responsible and minimal use of chemicals that may also kill beneficial insects, harm pets or possibly enter the water table. She will teach how to identify good bugs vs. bag bugs and the thoughtful, careful use of pesticides for control in our gardens and landscapes. Travis County AgriLife Extension Office, 1600B Smith Rd Conserve water and reduce water stress to potted plants, landscaping or vegetable garden by using a drip irrigation system. Learn about the two most common drip systems available and how to utilize one or the other or combination of the systems. Discover how to test the water pressure to determine the length of the run. Sexual Harrassment? No Interpreter? #DO-DO YOU?

As a Deaf or Hard of Hearing individual in a work environment, have you ever experienced:

  • Feeling unsure if someone else’s behavior is a sexual harassment?
  • Feeling "trapped" by communication barriers?
  • Having a request for a qualified interpreter or another accommodation to ensure effective communication to discuss a sexual harassment situation be denied?
  • Not knowing your civil rights?

Come learn how to self-advocate as a Deaf or Hard of Hearing individual. There are ways you can handle sexual harassment or disability discrimination by self-advocating for your rights or get advocacy services. When this does not work, there are specific guidelines to follow in filing complaints with various agencies. Learn how to improve your life and the life of others in the most positive ways possible.

Family Weekend Retreat

Every summer the Educational Resource Center on Deafness and the Texas School for the Deaf host a popular program called Family Weekend Retreat (FWR) for families in Texas who have a child who is deaf or hard of hearing. We offer something of interest for everyone in the family - fun activities, educational workshops and lots of opportunities to network with other families. All family members are welcome!

Register by April 30th to receive the early bird cost of $75 for a family of 4 and $10 for each additional family member – this includes meals and lodging in the dorms. Standard pricing of $100/family of four goes into effect on May 1st. Families arrive on Friday afternoon and depart on Sunday by noon.

Please note: Deaf or hard of hearing students who are enrolled at TSD and their families are not eligible for this outreach program.
