[This is not Nerd Nite 60, that announcement soon].
Some call me Stevesie.
Nerd Nite Austin and the North Door are excited to present a screening of Wes Anderson’s, “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” along with two themed talks and heaps of fun nerdiness sprinkled on top like fresh bonito flakes.
“The Life Aquatic” was recently released in high definition for the first time ever to mark the 10th anniversary of the movie. To celebrate we want to see Bill Murray and the Jaguar Shark on a giant screen with all our nerd friends. We will open with two Nerd Nite talks on marine science and the biography of Jacques Cousteau. Then we will watch the movie on the North Door’s giant screen.
There will be campari specials, interns in red caps, gorgeous sea art and every nerdy sea thing we can get our hands on.
The talks: NOT sign language interpreted NOT
"The Science Behind the Jaguar Shark: the biological basis of bioluminescence and fluorescence in the ocean." by Roxana Caper
The glowy target of Steve Zissou’s wrath is not far from reality. Roxana will talk about bioluminescence and fluorescence in the ocean: what it is, how it works, and why weird animals in the sea do it.
Roxana Capper is currently a multifaceted Ph.D. candidate in Cell and Molecular Biology at UT Austin, where she studies coral genetics and evolution. Despite having grown up next to a corn field in Central Ohio, she has always been aquatically oriented. She enjoys breathing underwater, bloviating about insects and telling terrible jokes.
"Deth Aquatic: the weird, wonderful, true stories of the Jacques Cousteau." by Lewis Weil
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is based on (but not approved by) Jacques Cousteau and his friends and family. Cousteau invented scuba diving and then shortly after that the genre of explorer documentary film. The presentation will tell the true stories behind his life and family, which are even more wonderful and surreal than the movie they inspired.
Lewis Weil is a shark wrangler, seaweed farmer, and other stuff including co-boss of Nerd Nite- Austin (how convenient. He is obsessed with all things living the life aquatic.
[ASL interpreters will be present]
Our friends at the Austin-born, interplanetary phenomenon Intergalactic Nemesis will storm the North Door stage this month to bring us specific instructions to prevent the robot uprising! It involves banging pots, fyi.
