A local acting group is looking for Deaf actors for an upcoming play:
Please encourage those with no acting experience as well, especially hearing family members of your students that know ASL. A reading is a great way to get a start, and no memorization is required.
We are also open to actors that are under 18 for some of these roles, so please encourage those who may fall into those categories as well.
All the roles are paid.
5 ASL DEAF ACTOR ROLES (2 young males, 1 adult male, 1 adult female, 1 adult male or female) 4 TRILINGUAL SPEAKING ACTOR ROLES (ENGLISH, SPANISH, ASL) (3 female, 1 male) 2 ASL/ENG SPEAKING ACTOR ROLES (either male or female)
Thursday, March 2 (8 pm): Los Moreno by Mercedes Floresislas Directed by Mary Alice Carnes
Synopsis: Los Moreno, a trilingual play in American Sign Language, Spanish and English, tells the story of how deafness affects the Moreno family. Carlos, the Deaf teenager has a lot more to worry about than just growing up—he has to process his mother’s arrest and possible deportation, and deal with his hearing father who has not learned how to sign. While in jail, Mrs. Moreno must “cholofy” herself in order to survive and Mr. Moreno must tame his internalized macho in order to rescue his son from self-destruction.
Playwright: Mercedes Floresislas is a Deaf Theater playwright currently working towards her MFA in Creative Writing for the Performing Arts at the University of California Riverside. She uses theater to create opportunities for Deaf and Hard of Hearing actors and spread awareness of Deaf related issues and American Sign Language. Her first play developed at UCR, Los Moreno, a trilingual play, is the winner of the 2016 KCATF Latinidad Award, as well as the first alternate for the National Partners American Theater Award.
DOPER THAN DOPE brings all the 90s nostalgia with a FLY GIRL dance team, resident DJ Mahealani, and a diverse ensemble of talented writer-performers (think In Living Color and House of Buggin' - our biggest influences!).
We'd like to share a direct link to some discounted tickets ($10) here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/doper-than-dope-2-tickets-28234326631?discount=DOPEFAM2
Please feel free to share with your group (and friends and family) - we only have 2 performances this run and though we are in a bigger venue than this summer (we sold out every single show in July) we really have no idea what box office will look like this time around and want to get the word out early to EVERYONE in the community.
Let me know if you have any questions and hope to see you at a show in December!
Some DOPE press (from our July run):
Austin American Statesman
"New generation picks up cultural satire of 90's groundbreaking comedy."
KUT Radio - Arts Eclectic
"This Sketch Show is 'DOPER THAN DOPE.'"
"New Live Comedy Show Is Doper Than What, Exactly?"?
Join us to play some fun games and learn about your rights on communication access and win some holiday prizes!
A ham and water bottles will be provided by Communication Axess.
Please bring a covered dish to share.
